Pintor estadounidense de origen armenio. En 1920 emigró de Turquía a EE.UU. En 1925, después de haber estudiado en la Escuela de diseño de Rhode Island, se estableció en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde estudió y luego enseñó en la Escuela de arte Grand Central (1926–31). Quiso asimilar las visiones estéticas de Paul Cézanne, Joan Miró y Pablo Picasso, pintando en sus estilos, hasta que conoció a los surrealistas (ver surrealismo) europeos emigrados. Desarrolló entonces su propio estilo de abstracción, realizando figuras biomorfas que sugerían plantas o vísceras humanas flotando sobre un fondo de colores fundidos. Luego de una serie de desgracias personales se ahorcó. Es el eslabón directo más importante entre el surrealismo y el expresionismo abstracto.
